Book Recommendation: Uniquely Human

Every once in a while, you come across a book that completely shifts the way you see the world. For me, Uniquely Human by Dr. Barry Prizant is one of those books. While it’s often recommended for families who have children or loved ones with autism, I truly believe this is a book everyone should read — parents, teachers, caregivers, and honestly, anyone who wants to better understand human connection.

This book is so much more than “autism information.” It’s filled with real-life stories that open your eyes to the whybehind certain behaviors and the how of responding in a way that is compassionate and supportive. It doesn’t just give you facts — it gives you perspective. It’s the kind of read that sticks with you long after you turn the last page.

One of the topics it touches on is something my own family has wrestled with: When to tell a child about their diagnosis. We’ve chosen not to tell our boys yet. Our older one, in particular, might use it as an excuse rather than understanding what it really means — and that’s not a reflection on him, just a recognition that he’s not ready for that conversation.

I’ve thought about telling them many times, but each time, I come back to the same decision: wait. I want them to understand before we have that conversation. The silver lining is that when we do tell them, they’ll have each other to talk to — someone who shares their experience and can relate in ways even we, as parents, cannot.

Trust me: read it, and you’ll never see the world quite the same way again.
